Alchemy DataGrabber![]()
DataGrabber enables your users to quickly find information when they need it and you can reduce your operational costs.
Alchemy® DataGrabber, an extension for Alchemy® Gold, Premium, and
Pro, is used for COLD and enterprise report management (ERM) applications.
Together, DataGrabber and Alchemy give you electronic access to
the documents you used to store only on microfiche or green bar, so your
users can quickly find the information when they need it and you can
reduce your operational costs. And Alchemy is still the leader in using
CDs or DVDs to distribute or archive this data.
DataGrabber captures ASCII and EBCDIC print
files created by relational databases, corporate
reporting systems, or document management
systems, and imports the data directly into the
Alchemy repository at very high speeds.
DataGrabber uses a simple but powerful scripting
language to parse the file into pages, records and
profile fields. It provides a configurable data
capture feature that allows you to create custom
report templates for each data source. Unlike
other data capture tools that use rigid predefined
templates, DataGrabber is fully configurable,
enabling it to handle irregular or complex reports.
It does not require any source code changes on
your legacy systems.
The data imported by DataGrabber is compressed,
indexed and stored in the Alchemy repository
alongside information from other document
sources. DataGrabber can process up to one
gigabyte of data per hour on a personal computer,
meaning that data is quickly available for users to
search and view.
DataGrabber can also merge a file containing
image index fields with the image files, making it
an ideal solution for converting obsolete imaging
systems to Alchemy or integrating mainframe
data into your image repository.
How does DataGrabber work?
Using the scripting language, you create a definition file to describe
how you want to capture and import the ASCII file
into the repository. Then you define page and
record breaks, the information to extract for
profile fields, and regular expressions. You can
also use the definition file to instruct Alchemy to
copy files stored in a network path and match
each file to its respective index field. You can also
convert EBCDIC files to ASCII for processing with
DataGrabber. Using the debug mode, you then
test the definition file and make any necessary
adjustments. One option is to add a bitmap form
overlay to a set of records so the record is displayed
in the form. Finally, run the DataGrabber
process in Alchemy to import, parse, compress
and index the metadata. You can also select the
powerful full-text indexing option. During this
stage, DataGrabber can also dynamically create
new fields and populate folders. Now you have
stored a fully indexed report file stored as
individual records in Alchemy.
